I know what you're thinking....GROSS!!! But it's actually not that bad. (Or maybe we are just so used to it by now!) It's what we eat on New Years Day every year. My daddy, being from the south, kept this tradition as long ago as I can remember. One year my daddy couldn't make it home for New Years Day for some reason and so my hubby took the job of making this "delicacy" and he's been in chrage ever since. The reason behind the tradition is to eat a humble (and extremely cheap) meal on the first day of the year to remind you of your blessings and to know that if times get bad, you can always stomach black eyed peas and ham hock (and corn bread). We are also supposed to each keep a few uncooked beans all year to bring us luck in the new year. I'll let ya know if it works;) In the mean time, just know that we have a pretty good supply of black eyed peas...if you hit hard times...we'll share!
